Franklin Gothic was named after US publisher and politician Benjamin Franklin. Brown is named after Canadian publisher and politician George Brown. Brown was commissioned in 1999 by The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper, which was founded (well, The Globe part anyway) by Brown in 1844.
The colour of Brown Extra Bold is designed to match Franklin Gothic Condensed, i.e. it has the same approximate characters-per-pica and weight.
Brown has a barely discernible distressing. The effect is marginally like Optima, and Walburn, another ShinnType face. In fact, Brown was designed to complement Walburn, which is also used in The Globe and Mail.
The letter forms of Brown are modernist, more like Helvetica or Univers than Franklin Gothic or Bureau Grotesque. But with its subtle finish, Brown avoids the reductive quality that makes many people uncomfortable with 20th Century modernism.
